Lessons in Leadership: The Future of Beauty with CEW President Elana Drell Szyfer - E.831Read Full Article

Lessons in Leadership: The Future of Beauty with CEW President Elana Drell Szyfer - E.831

In this episode of Skin Anarchy, host Dr. Ekta Yadav sits down with Elana Drell Szyfer, the president of Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW) and one of the most respected leaders in the global beauty industry. With more than three decades of experience spanning some of the industry’s most influential companies, Elana reflects on the career decisions, leadership lessons, and industry shifts that have shaped both her journey and the beauty landscape as a whole.

Her story offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at how careers in beauty evolve—from corporate leadership roles to private equity brand building—and what it takes to navigate an industry that is constantly reinventing itself.

    An Unexpected Path Into Beauty

Elana did not originally set out to build a career in beauty. As a history major in college, she initially imagined working in the nonprofit world, particularly in arts philanthropy. Her first professional role at the Juilliard School focused on fundraising and donor relations, connecting scholarship recipients with the individuals funding their education.

However, after exploring marketing coursework and considering an MBA, her career path began to shift. Her first entry point into the beauty world came through a position at Chanel, where she worked in the company’s family office. Although she was not directly part of the beauty division, the experience exposed her to the inner workings of the industry and sparked a fascination with the business of beauty.

Determined to move closer to the operating side of the industry, she began studying the trade publications and writing directly to industry leaders. That initiative eventually led to a role at L'Oréal, where her career in beauty truly began.

Building the Foundations of a Marketing Career

At L’Oréal, Elana initially worked in finance support but soon transitioned into marketing—a move that would define the first major phase of her career. Over the next 18 years, she built deep experience across categories and brands, working at companies including Avon, returning to L’Oréal, and later joining Estée Lauder.

Throughout this time, she approached her career with a clear strategy. Her goal was to eventually lead a global marketing organization, and every role she accepted helped build the skills needed to reach that position. She intentionally sought experience across product categories—including skincare, fragrance, and personal care—as well as across both large and small brands.

This deliberate approach ultimately culminated in her role leading global marketing for the Estée Lauder brand. In that position, she oversaw innovation strategy, product development pipelines, and global brand direction—managing a business where the majority of revenue came from international markets.

Moving From Corporate Leadership to Entrepreneurship

After nearly two decades in large corporations, Elana began considering a new challenge: running a brand herself.

Encouraged by colleagues and advisors, she began exploring opportunities in private equity and independent brand leadership—an area that was still relatively uncommon at the time for executives leaving major beauty companies. Ultimately, she made the decision to step away from corporate leadership and move into the entrepreneurial side of the industry.

Over the next 15 years, she ran multiple beauty brands backed by private investors, gaining experience not only in brand management but also in financial strategy, acquisitions, and exits. One of the most significant chapters of this phase was her role as CEO of RéVive, where she led the company through acquisition, operational transformation, and eventual sale to a Chinese strategic buyer in 2024.

The experience gave her a completely different perspective on the business of beauty—one that combined brand building with financial ownership and investment strategy.

The Evolution of Marketing in Beauty

During the conversation, Elana also reflects on how dramatically marketing in beauty has evolved over the past three decades. While the channels for discovery have changed—from print advertising and retail counters to social media platforms like TikTok—the fundamental principles of marketing remain surprisingly consistent.

Consumers still rely heavily on trusted recommendations and personal connections when discovering new products. What has changed is the complexity of the customer journey and the number of platforms through which consumers encounter brands.

For marketers today, one of the biggest challenges is determining where to focus resources. Unlike earlier eras where marketing channels were more limited, brands now face a fragmented landscape that requires clear strategic choices about where to invest attention and budget.

The Rise of Buzzwords—and the Need for Standards

Another topic explored in the episode is the rise of science-driven marketing language in beauty. Terms like “biotech,” “longevity,” and “science-backed” have become increasingly common, but Elana notes that the industry is still navigating how to define and standardize these claims.

As the lines between beauty, wellness, and medical science continue to blur—particularly with innovations connected to biotechnology and treatments like GLP-1 medications—she believes the industry will eventually move toward clearer definitions and standardized language.

Until then, the landscape may continue to feel somewhat like the “Wild West,” where strong marketing narratives can create short-term viral success but must ultimately be backed by real performance to maintain consumer trust.

    A New Chapter at CEW

Today, Elana begins a new phase of her career as president of CEW, an organization dedicated to advancing leadership and collaboration across the beauty, health, and wellness industries. Having served on the CEW board for more than a decade, she brings both industry insight and leadership experience to the role.

Her focus moving forward will be on supporting the next generation of beauty leaders while continuing to strengthen the connections between brands, executives, entrepreneurs, and innovators across the global beauty ecosystem.

After more than 30 years in the industry, Elana’s journey highlights how beauty careers can evolve in unexpected ways—and how leadership, adaptability, and curiosity remain essential in an industry defined by constant transformation.

Listen to the full episode of Skin Anarchy to hear Elana Drell Szyfer share insights from her decades in beauty leadership, the evolution of marketing, and where she believes the industry is headed next.

Pioneering Protocol-Based Solutions for Skin Longevity Featuring 111SKIN Founders Dr. Yannis Alexandrides and Eva Alexandridis - E.819

In this episode of Skin Anarchy, Dr. Ekta Yadav is joined by renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Yannis Alexandrides and Eva Alexandridis, the husband-and-wife team behind 111 Harley St. and 111SKIN, for a wide-ranging conversation on regenerative aesthetics, protocol-based skincare, and what longevity really means when grounded in science—not hype. A Skincare Line Born in the Operating Room 111SKIN did not begin as a consumer brand. It began in Dr. Alexandrides’ Harley Street surgical practice, where he was searching for ways to help patients heal faster after facelifts, neck lifts, and facial surgery. When no existing products met his standards, he assembled a team of scientists to develop what would become the Dramatic Healing Serum, a formula designed specifically to accelerate post-surgical recovery. Patients quickly noticed not just improved healing, but clearer, stronger, more resilient skin—long after surgery was complete. That patient feedback became the foundation for translating surgical-grade science into daily skincare. Maintenance Is Not Optional A core theme of the episode is the often-missed space between procedures and products. Surgical outcomes, Dr. Alexandrides explains, are only as good as the skin’s baseline health. Without proper at-home maintenance, even the most technically perfect procedure is compromised. Eva expands on this philosophy, emphasizing that 111SKIN was never about quick fixes—it was about long-term skin behavior. Treating skin with the same seriousness as surgery fundamentally changes how it responds, heals, and ages. Why Quality Takes Years, Not Months Every 111SKIN product follows the same rigorous pathway: real-world testing in the clinic, honest patient feedback, measurable outcomes, and only then formal clinical studies. Nothing moves forward unless it delivers meaningful, repeatable results. Eva explains that formulas are never “one-size-fits-all”—each is designed to solve a specific biological problem, whether that’s long-term barrier repair, inflammation control, or regenerative support. This is why some launches take years, not seasons. Exosomes as a Treatment, Not a Trend One of the most important discussions centers on 111SKIN’s exosome protocol—a rare example of restraint in a category often driven by overpromising. Dr. Alexandrides had been using exosomes in-office for over four years before allowing a retail version to exist. Even then, it was designed as a time-bound protocol, not a daily product. Exosomes, he explains, are cellular messengers that activate regeneration and collagen production, but the skin does not need—or benefit from—constant exposure. Used improperly, even powerful technologies can lose efficacy or create confusion. Supporting the skin’s intelligence, rather than overriding it, is the goal. The Rise of Regenerative Aesthetics The conversation naturally expands into the evolution of plastic surgery itself. Dr. Alexandrides breaks down the science behind deep plane facelifts and the Y-facelift technique, explaining how working in deeper anatomical layers allows for natural repositioning without skin tension—leading to better healing, minimal scarring, and more youthful contours. Importantly, these techniques can now be applied earlier, helping patients “stay” at a youthful version of themselves rather than dramatically reversing advanced aging later in life. Moving Beyond Fillers Toward Micrografting As fillers fall under increased scrutiny, Dr. Alexandrides shares why he has largely transitioned to micrografting—using a patient’s own fat cells to restore volume and support skin health. Unlike synthetic fillers, micrografting integrates naturally, avoids rejection, and can last for years. It represents a broader shift toward biologically aligned, regenerative solutions rather than temporary volume replacement. Redefining Longevity Aesthetics Longevity, both Eva and Dr. Alexandrides agree, is not about extreme intervention or constant stacking of treatments. True longevity aesthetics prioritize prevention, skin quality, and emotional well-being. The goal is not transformation, but preservation—looking like yourself for longer. This requires education, restraint, and honest dialogue between practitioner and patient, especially as younger consumers seek permanent solutions earlier. Education as a Medical Responsibility The episode closes with a strong stance on patient education. Aesthetic medicine, Dr. Alexandrides explains, demands a 360-degree approach—clear communication of risks, benefits, alternatives, and long-term strategy. Platforms like Skin Anarchy play a critical role in democratizing access to evidence-based knowledge, especially for those who may not yet be patients but want to make informed decisions. Listen to the full episode of Skin Anarchy to hear Dr. Yannis and Eva Alexandridis unpack the science behind regenerative skincare, modern plastic surgery, and why longevity is about refined naturalism—not chasing extremes.

Discovering Dossier: Turning Dupe Culture Into a Luxury Fragrance Movement - E.799

In this episode of Skin Anarchy, host Dr. Ekta Yadav welcomes Sergio Tache, the founder and CEO of Dossier, the viral fragrance brand making waves across TikTok and beyond. The conversation explores Sergio’s unexpected journey from finance to fragrance and how Dossier is disrupting one of beauty’s most exclusive industries by making luxury scents accessible to all. From Finance to Fragrance Sergio began his career in the finance world before catching what he calls “the entrepreneurship bug.” After launching ventures in hair care and skincare, a chance conversation led to his next big idea: perfume. His observation was simple—why should smelling good cost $150 or more? That question became the seed for Dossier, a brand built on the belief that great fragrance shouldn’t be a luxury reserved for a few. Democratizing the World of Scent Dossier started with a mission to offer high-quality, cruelty-free perfumes made with premium ingredients—without the designer markup. What began as a “value play,” Sergio explains, quickly became something deeper: discovery. Customers weren’t just drawn to affordable alternatives; they were using Dossier to explore, layer, and build fragrance wardrobes for different moods and occasions. “People no longer have to choose between paying rent and smelling nice,” Sergio says. “We’ve made discovery possible for everyone.” Originals, Impressions, and the Art of Transparency While Dossier first gained recognition for its “impressions” collection—scents inspired by luxury icons—the brand has since expanded into original creations, including its cult-favorite It Factor. These in-house perfumes represent Dossier’s evolution from “dupe brand” to full-fledged modern perfume house. Sergio also opens up about how Dossier strips away unnecessary excess: minimalist packaging, recyclable bottles, and no inflated prestige pricing. “We took all the elements that make a perfume great—high-quality ingredients, French craftsmanship—and removed the fluff,” he says. A New Kind of Luxury When asked about luxury pricing, Sergio is frank: “Most designer perfumes cost $300 because they can.” Dossier’s approach challenges that model, proving that true luxury lies in quality and intention, not price tags or ornate packaging. For him, luxury should be about access and education, not intimidation. Scent Without Limits Sergio also reflects on shifting consumer behavior—particularly the rise of male fragrance enthusiasts and the growing interest in genderless scents. “Perfume is personal,” he notes. “Our goal is to create a space that’s welcoming and inclusive, where everyone feels empowered to explore.” Dossier isn’t just reimagining the price of luxury—it’s redefining its meaning. By focusing on transparency, craftsmanship, and inclusivity, the brand is ushering in a new era where great fragrance belongs to everyone.
